STAFF PROFILE
Ryan Schmidt
Research Project Manager

Mr. Schmidt is a Research Project Manager at the Heschong
Mahone Group, Inc. His well-rounded background includes water resources
engineering and building science-based design. He also has hands-on
experience in residential construction, maintenance, and performance
evaluation.
Mr. Schmidt provides
simulation, program, and other technical support for multi-family and
large commercial building evaluation and design assistance projects.
Additionally Ryan applies his building science expertise and simulation
skills to residential building energy systems research. The above work
integrates well with his regular support of HMG’s codes and standards
development projects. An advocate for integrated design, Ryan believes
in systems-based building strategies and a multi-disciplinary approach
to evaluating and addressing environmental challenges. The vast
potential for making positive, cost-effective impacts in the comfort,
health, and efficiency of both new and existing buildings makes his
position at HMG a fulfilling one.
Ryan spends time away
from work completing independent thesis research for an M.S. in
Environmental Studies at San Jose State University, where his emphases
are energy policy/resources and green building design. His thesis
involves post-occupancy analysis of a Bay Area Habitat for Humanity
green residential development.
Prior to HMG, Ryan was
employed as an evaluation and design consultant for a building
performance contractor in San Francisco. There he collaborated with
homeowners, architects, and builders to first understand and then
cost-effectively optimize the efficiency, comfort, and health of their
residential new construction and remodeling projects. Before returning
to graduate school, Ryan spent four years in the field of wastewater
treatment systems implementation and water resources design. His
experience included project management, system modeling and analysis,
design, and construction specifications for water supply, flood control,
public works, and private development projects.
Mr. Schmidt is a
registered professional civil engineer in the State of California, a
Certified Green Building Professional (CGBP), a Certified Energy Plans
Examiner (CEPE), and a member of the California Building Performance
Contractors Association (CBPCA). Mr. Schmidt graduated magna cum laude
with a B.S. in civil engineering, and a minor in history, from Santa
Clara University.
