Demand Responsive Thermostatic Controls

This measure evaluates the feasibility of requiring programmable thermostats in residential and nonresidential buildings that can be easily upgraded to have demand response capabilities.

Controls and Demand Response
Demand Responsive Lighting Controls

This measure is developing specifications to define lighting control systems with adequate demand response capabilities and an acceptance test to ensure DR equipment functions as designed.

Lighting topics
Water Heater Standing Loss

This measure is developing requirements that will reduce standby losses from natural draft circulation up the flue in natural gas water heaters. Mandatory requirement for water heaters to be equipped with flue dampers or have force draft design.

Process Air Compressors, Boilers, and Water Heaters
Water Heating and Space Heating

This measure will improve the ACM to reduce distribution heat loss by space heating and domestic hot water systems.

Nonresidential HVAC
PIER Study Acceptance Testing

Project will take the results of a PIER project investigating acceptance testing requirements, propose strategies to simplify tests or testing procedures, and/or propose new tests as appropriate, and support the recommendations through the CEC rulemaking process.

Acceptance Testing and Design-phase Commissioning
Commissioning/RCx Acceptance Tests

Propose new acceptance tests from experience with retro commissioning or commissioning programs that have identified common failure modes that can be identified with a short directed acceptance test.

Acceptance Testing and Design-phase Commissioning
VAV labs and fume exhaust

VAV control for labs.  Includes measures to control the pressurization of rooms and variable fume exhaust.

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Chiller eff and Chiller k Factor Equation

Significantly improved chiller efficiencies / part load performance for chillers.  Also K factor: This increases the coverage of chillers by 52% more than the existing tables and 10% over 90.1-2007 Addendum M

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Heat recovery for high ACH

Require heat recovery for heating and cooling systems with high ventilation rates.

Nonresidential HVAC
Kitchen vent

Commercial kitchen ventilation controls

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Small ECM motors

Require ECM for non-fractional hp motors - and all motors that are not part of NAECA covered equipment (including exhaust fans and parallel VAV boxes).

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Garage CO DCV

DCV for garage ventilation - O2 sensors. Includes aged/accuracy sensor testing in local garages

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Plug Load Controls

Methods of reducing stand-by loads with centralized controls for turning off banks of circuits  during  unoccupied hours.  Parallel circuits for controllable and non-controllable plug loads.

Controls and Demand Response
PV ready buildings

Require non-residential buildings to be PV Ready by requiring pre-piping conduit between service panel and roof, and/or requiring a minimum % of roof space be left free for PV, and/or other structural or rooftop configuration measures.

Solar Topics
Cooling towers

Investigate appropriate W/Btu of heat rejection appropriate for longer hours associated with process cooling, VSD control of fans.  Add closed circuit fluid coolers to table 112-G.  Provide prescriptive minimum approach based on minimum efficiency, hours of use and climate.

ASHRAE 90.1-related topics and Cooling Towers
Air compressors

Develop requirements for industrial plants with compressed air systems to implement system control mechanisms on multi-compressor systems.

Process Air Compressors, Boilers, and Water Heaters
Boilers

This measure will investigate draft damper or forced draft, parallel positioning and O2 trim control, and VFD for large boilers

Process Air Compressors, Boilers, and Water Heaters
Solar water heating

Increase the prescriptive requirement for residential solar water heating when electric resistance water heating is used, and implement requirement for commercial building types where electric water heat is used.  Introduce an hourly solar thermal model for solar water heating.

Solar Topics
Boiler temperature reset controls

Remove the current chilled and hot water temperature reset controls exception in section 144J to apply only to hot water systems with VSDs, rather than all hydronic systems with variable flow

Process Air Compressors, Boilers, and Water Heaters
Cooling Tower Water Savings

Increase cycles of concentration/ decrease blow down in cooling towers.
