Douglas Mahone - HMG Principal
Douglas Mahone is an architect who has specialized in
the field of building energy efficiency since 1974. He is an acknowledged expert on
energy efficiency codes and standards for buildings, and is currently
leading a team of consultants in the development of upgrades for both
residential and nonresidential energy codes in
California. He served as a committee
member for ASHRAE in the development of the national model energy code,
ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999. He has also written manuals and trained
design professionals and utility personnel on the technical aspects of
energy codes, such as
California
’s Title 24 (residential and commercial), the national Model Energy
Code (residential) and the ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 Code (commercial).
Mr.
Mahone has had a long history of collaborations with major energy
efficiency programs evaluating their energy efficiency programs.
He worked with both SMUD
and Seattle City Light in developing their next generation portfolios of
energy efficiency programs. He lead a team of nationally prominent
evaluators in coordinating the measurement and evaluation activities for
NYSERDA’s Energy $mart portfolio of efficiency programs. Mr. Mahone has
worked closely with the Southern California Edison Company to manage
market and impact evaluation studies for the nonresidential new
construction market sector, and the with Pacific Gas and Electric
Company to prepare code change proposals for the California’s Building
Energy Efficiency Standards. On behalf of the California utilities and
the state’s energy agencies, he lead the development of a new approach
for valuing the energy savings attributable to codes and standards
program activities, and contributed to the development of the CPUC’s
protocol for evaluating codes and standards programs. Working with the
CEC and the utilities, he facilitated the development of the Time
Dependent Valuation (TDV) methodology for energy code performance
trade-offs. He has also led important program design and evaluation
efforts for the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, and for other
utilities across North America.
As Principal and
President of the Heschong Mahone Group Inc., Mr. Mahone manages a
diverse and growing multidisciplinary staff with training in
architecture, engineering and economics.
He provides direction and training for project managers and
technical staff on a wide range of projects for some of the leading
energy efficiency organizations in the nation.
In addition to his
private practice, Mr. Mahone was the Founding Executive Director of the
non-profit New Buildings Institute.
Previously, he taught building science and energy subjects at the
MIT School of Architecture as an Assistant Professor. Mr. Mahone received his B.Sc. and
Master of Architecture degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. He is a licensed
architect, registered in
Massachusetts
and
California.
