STAFF PROFILE

Ryan Schmidt - Research Project Manager

Ryan Schmidt is a Research Project Manager at the Heschong Mahone Group. His well-rounded background includes water resources engineering and building science-based design. He also has hands-on experience in residential construction, maintenance, and performance evaluation. At HMG, Ryan provides simulation and other technical support for multi-family and commercial building evaluation, as well as design assistance projects. The vast potential for making positive, cost-effective impacts in the comfort, health, and efficiency of both new and existing buildings makes his role at HMG an exciting one.

An advocate for integrated design, Ryan believes in systems-based building strategies and a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluating and addressing environmental challenges. He spends time away from work completing independent thesis research for an M.S. in Environmental Studies at San Jose State University, where his emphases are energy policy/resources and green building design. His thesis involves post-occupancy analysis of a Bay Area Habitat for Humanity green residential development.

Before returning to graduate school, Ryan spent four years in the field of wastewater treatment systems implementation and water resources design. His experience included project management, system modeling and analysis, design, and construction specifications for water supply, flood control, public works, and private development projects. Most recently prior to joining HMG, Ryan was employed as an evaluation and design consultant for a building performance contractor in San Francisco. There he collaborated with homeowners, architects, and builders to first understand and then cost-effectively optimize the efficiency, comfort, and health of their residential new construction and remodeling projects.

Ryan graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in civil engineering, and a minor in history, from Santa Clara University. He is a registered professional civil engineer in the State of California, a Certified Green Building Professional (CGBP), a Certified Energy Plans Examiner (CEPE), and a member of the California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA).
