Energy Program Design

Designed for Comfort, SDG&E Residential New Construction Energy Efficiency Program

The Heschong Mahone Group designed a residential new construction program for San Diego Gas & Electric that complement its existing program (which focuses on production homes). The program includes design assistance, recognition and advertising of energy efficient apartments, and design team incentives based on a Whole Building, computer simulation approach, or a simplified Systems Approach. The Heschong Mahone Group is responsible for the complete development of the program, including: overall program design, coordination of the engineering analysis required for the Systems Approach software tool, brochure development, new construction representative training, energy consultant training and training material development. The project began with an assessment of the residential new construction market, identification of barriers to more energy efficient construction and a survey of market participants to gain input on potential interventions. The Program began Spring of 2000.

Savings By Design, CA Statewide NonResidential New Construction Energy Efficiency Program

The Heschong Mahone Group facilitated the design and joint development of a statewide coordinated nonresidential new construction program for Pacific Gas and Electric, San Diego Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison. The program includes design assistance and owner and design team incentives based on a Whole Building, computer simulation approach, or a simplified Systems Approach. The Heschong Mahone Group was responsible for the overall program design, coordination of the engineering analysis required for the Systems Approach software tool and brochure development, utility new construction representative training and training material development.

Solar Hot Water Program

For the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), evaluated their current solar hot water program marketing and outreach techniques. Made recommendations for changes and alternative approaches.

1996 New Construction Services

For the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), evaluated their current array of services and proposed changes to their commercial new construction program. Project included leading focus groups within and without of the utility to identify key services and opportunities.

Marketing of Utility Energy Services

For Pacific Gas & Electric, consulted to the Marketing Products and Services department for the development of new approaches to marketing their services to customers in a deregulated environment. While the details of this project are confidential, the work draws upon our knowledge and experience with the building design and construction community, and with utility program implementation and evaluation.

For San Diego Gas & Electric Co. provided technical program design and implementation assistance for the Savings Through Design program, a nonresidential new construction program with both prescriptive and performance options. Developed program implementation strategy that built on California’s energy code compliance procedures. Designed program brochures and application forms. Trained utility service representatives and customers on how to apply to the program and how to design beyond the energy code. Developed technical rules for Custom Option Matrix energy analysis approach.

SMUD Energy Education Center

For Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), members of the design team for the Energy Education Center for SMUD’s new headquarters building. Coordinated in-put from the client base of the Energy Education Center and led a focus group of architects, engineers and building owners to provide feedback on the proposed design.
