Multifamily Buildings: High Performance Design Training
FREE WORKSHOP SERIES

Learn how to design high performance new multifamily projects and qualify for cash incentives for builder/developers and the energy consultant/design team. Workshop participation includes learning units from the American Institute of Architects.

You should attend one of the Multifamily Buildings: High Performance
Design Training
workshops if you would like to:

  • Learn the most cost effective means of designing, modeling, and building energy efficiency into new multifamily construction projects,
  • Learn about resources that are available to improve the energy efficiency of your multifamily projects,
  • Learn about California's Utility programs (SCE and PG&E Territories) for training, design assistance and charrettes, technical resources, Energy Efficiency-Based Utility Allowance schedules, and information about funding energy efficiency
  • Participate in SCE and PG&E's California Multifamily New Homes Programs and learn about design assistance, cash incentives, and marketing benefits for participating projects
  • Learn about other programs that help to improve your building performance
  • Obtain information on the utility-sponsored design assistance and design team incentives (Design team incentives are paid directly to the design team, and are in addition to the incentives the owner receives

2009 Multifamily Residential New Construction Workshop Series

The Multifamily Buildings: High Performance Design Training workshops provide two levels of classes: A comprehensive energy efficiency overview training and an advanced level hands-on simulation training.

The Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Overview session provides a comprehensive introduction on a variety of multifamily building issues. The training is Power Point slide show based, designed to be very interactive, and augmented by examples of equipment, materials, and building analyses. Training topics will include:

  • Utility programs overview (SCE and PG&E)

  • PG&E and SCE Multifamily programs overview, with a special focus on making participation easier

  • 2005 California Building Energy Standards (Title 24) overview
  • Multifamily energy efficiency design concepts
  • Overview of energy efficiency measures (Site, HVAC, envelope, water heating, verification/inspections, etc)
  • Case Studies
  • Cost/benefit analysis approaches
  • Financing for multifamily buildings: Utility, CEC , DOE, EPA, and other possible funding
  • Energy efficiency resources list

The Advanced Energy Efficiency Hands-On Simulation session builds on the comprehensive training session by delving further into multifamily building issues. It provides a hands-on opportunity to learn how to cost effectively explore several scenarios in designing and building energy efficient multifamily projects, using the EnergyPro software program.  Attendees will use plans and energy models of real projects loaded onto laptops to consider several energy efficiency options in a small group setting.  Attendees will use a cost/benefit spreadsheet to compare the impact of each option. Prior attendance at the comprehensive training, or prior experience with Title 24 documentation and use of EnergyPro/Micropas software programs is highly recommended. Workshops topics will include:

  • How to use and best apply tools and design practices to achieve maximum cost-effective energy efficient designs of multifamily new construction projects.

  • Identifying features needed to make a building meet the minimum requirements of state building codes, analyze difference between these features and Title 24 Prescriptive Package D, understand where to find performance data on building equipment,

  • Analysis of energy impacts of individual measures for specific climates. Learn how to incorporate several measures into a “whole building” approach to achieve approximately 15-20% energy efficiency savings over code minimums,

  • How to conceptualize approaches to design and achieve the maximum energy efficiency possible from a whole building, cost effectiveness method,

  • How to manipulate the tools (e.g., spreadsheets, web sites, and databases provided) to explore their design options.

Sign up now because space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Multifamily buildings should not be overlooked in local government stimulus efforts in that they house a majority of low-income families. Participants will learn about options, resources, and strategies for leveraging funding, energy efficiency programs for affordable and market-rate multifamily buildings, and approaches for lowering utility costs for low-income families.
