Ceiling Insulation Report: Effectiveness of Lay-In Ceiling Insulation

The “Ceiling Insulation Report” was produced as a part of the Integrated Design of Commercial Building Ceiling Systems project. This was one of six research projects within the Integrated Energy Systems: Productivity and Building Science Program, funded by the California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program.

This study compared the energy consumption and costs in commercial buildings for a number of insulation configurations: lay-in insulation above suspended acoustic ceilings, insulated drywall ceilings, and insulated roof decks. This research project uses phone surveys, field surveys, and analysis of various wall construction types to determine the prevalence and cost effectiveness of lay-in insulation and the alternative approaches.
